Detoxing from alcohol..what can you do ?

Detoxification is an ongoing process in the body.

Alcohol dependency and cravings exist in most households..well from my personal clinical experience.

You can reduce alcohol cravings by your understanding as to what is physiologically and psychologically happening in your body.

Here are some tips you might want to follow:

  1. If you are tempted to drink alcohol it may actually be a craving for sugar. The body converts alcohol in the body to sugar so try having some fruit or dried dates when the cravings arise.

  2. Never skip a meal. Silence the cravings by ensuring you have 5 small meals a day. Choose foods that improve digestion, balance blood sugar and normalise hormones like insulin and leptin. Include lean protein, healthy fats and fibre. The early evening is a danger for low blood sugar..from clinical experience most people start their binge around that time due to perhaps skipping lunch or an overdue dinner. A proper lunch, fruit and nuts in the afternoon will help prevent this.Remember too that what you might think is temptation to drink may be your body craving water. Your thirst may not be alcohol related after all.

  3. Sometimes you may feel a desire to drink alcohol because you're bored or need something to make you feel better.

  4. How about you try some exercise and give yourself an oxygen lift. The oxygen will change the way you feel even with just a 15 minute walk.

  5. Eat spinach raw.. the l-glutamine helps reduce cravings and anxiety that accompanies alcohol withdrawal.

  6. Eat brazil nuts-fibre, vitamin b and protein

  7. Nutrient deficiency is common for heavy drinkers. A lack of B vitamins, zinc and magnesium is common. Supplementing these can assist with alcohol cravings.

  8. Taking primrose oil has also been shown to curb the desire for alcohol due to its mood boosting prostaglandins.

Push through and don' t give in!!
